Farewell to Summer

We've recently had our first frost...and our annual potato harvest is just around the corner. School is back in session, and it's hard for me to figure out what on earth happened to the summer. It went by so fast as usual. It's been a hard summer...farming has been frustrating with bad weather ruining crops, and bad prices as well...it feels like we have worked so hard this summer, and it's frustrating when hard work doesn't always pay off. Looking back at the thousands of photos I took, I realize that despite what felt like a lot of work, we indeed had so many fun times, and that my kids are incredibly blessed to grow up in the country. We didn't have time visit amusement parks, zoos, or take many special trips, but let me tell you, the simple joys of life in the country can beat any form of entertainment out there! In honor of fall coming, I thought I would share some of our favorite summer fun photos. We are so busy with farming, yard work, gardening, canning, and just trying to keep up with everything around here, it's nice to look back and realize all of the fun we had as well! We are so blessed to have such a beautiful place to call home, and even luckier to have so many family and friends to share it with!

August 2013

 

I wasn't very good at keeping up with my blog this summer, and since it is cold and snowy outside today, I decided to go back and upload some photos from the month of August. August was a busy month for our family, but also a sad month. Some of you inquired as to why we have new puppies, and why May and June weren't in the photos with us any more. One hot August day, June went missing. We looked and looked for her. We were absolutely heartbroken and scared...there were so many tears shed. Meanwhile, while June was missing, May became very ill and ended up at the vet overnight. A week later, our kind neighbor found June dead under a pine tree on their property. We think she must have been hit by a car, and she ran to die under a tree. Exactly a week later, we awoke one morning to find May dead in our yard. Words cannot express the pain and sorrow we suffered. Those dogs were so special to us, and it was a very hard time for us. Grace was especially hurt, and to this day, she hardly goes a day without thinking of those dogs.

Besides the heartbreak during August, we did have many good times. We were busy with grain harvest, feeding the harvest crew, slip n sliding, gardening, playing outside with cousins, enjoying the last days of summer...Russ started playing Grid Kid football, the kids started school, we took a shopping trip to Utah, Grace turned 12, we spent time in the mountains behind our home, visiting grandparents, and enjoying time with family and friends.

As always, the farming season has flown by. Each year seems to go a bit quicker than the past. We finished our annual potato harvest, and it feels wonderful to be done! We couldn't have done it without all of the help of our family, and those who work for us that feel like family. Without their hard work and dedication, it would never happen. We are so grateful for those that dedicate the grueling hours to help our little farm survive and operate...and grateful that we are able to make a living off of the land. Our family is blessed beyond measure to be able to work alongside each other, and to enjoy the relationships that make hard work bearable.
